Liatris spicata. Gayfeather produces spikes of unusual, fluffy looking, white or purple flowers. The flowers open first at the top of the spike. It grows 4 to 5 feet tall and is best used at the back of the flower garden. The plant grows in any soil but best results are obtained in sandy soil and exposure to full sun or partial shade. Flowering occurs from August to September.
